MOTORCYCLE ON THE ROOFTOP
Meet Kalia and her bodacious baby bump during this Anchorage maternity shoot. She rode her Harley to join me on the rooftop parking garage of the 5th Avenue Mall in Downtown Anchorage, Alaska. This concrete lot with its straight lines, right angles, and stark white concrete half-wall has a vastly urban feel. It is on one of the tallest roofs in town with a surrounding cityscape, mountains, and the Cook Inlet in the distance.
One part of the wall was painted with a pop of orange that offered a beautiful contrast to her form fitting black body suit showing off the baby bump with an edgy jean biker jacket over top during our Anchorage maternity photoshoot.
The size and essentially vacant lot allowed space for Mom to ride her motorcycle safely around for us to get action shots of Kalia doing her favorite thing, riding that Harley! It was such a cute and unique take on a maternity photoshoot, which is often overly feminine or delicate, whereas here we captured Kalia riding her motorcycle with that big belly in action. Thus, it became a memorable Anchorage maternity photoshoot.
BIKER MAMMA AND WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO HER
Kalia and I planned for an afternoon in the summer, so she could ride to meet me, to not only capture her pregnancy but also the parts about her life that matter most, hugely her motorcycle. It was very important for Kalia to incorporate special details about her life to make the photoshoot seriously personal and one of a kind. Her Anchorage maternity shoot perfectly highlights these aspects. For sure, an Anchorage maternity photoshoot like this captures the essence of a unique personality.
Although focused mainly on her white and blue vintage Harley, Kalia brought her fur family for some pics with the pups too during the Anchorage maternity photoshoot. She was also plenty willing to pose with and without the bike, allowing each and every shot to be bursting with her unique personality.
KEEPING IDENTITY OF SELF AS A MOTHER
Incorporating unique aspects of who you are into a maternity session and personalizing the maternity photoshoot is as wonderful of an experience as taking pictures of the growing baby.
These moments we capture together are not only celebrating who you are about to be: Mother, Mamma, diaper changer, sleepy eyed and all of the beauty and wonder that comes with being a mom to a newborn. We know that sometimes, in those early days, we lose a tiny bit about ourselves focusing on keeping a tiny human alive.
So, during your maternity photoshoot it does not have to be solely about you becoming a mother. This beautiful life growing inside of the bump is important, but it can also be about you. This is something I always consider during an Anchorage maternity shoot.
You are the model and can choose how you wish to portray these images. I think it’s great to focus on the baby, but I encourage every mamma to not forget about themselves as well. Capture this moment of who you are before motherhood. Include family (human and furry-kind alike) their hobbies, the things they want to share and pass down to the little one.
In this maternity photoshoot with Kalia, she was the prime example of independence, self love, and excitement to bring her baby into the world of the things she loves.
BIKER BABY ON THE WAY
I was able to take photos of her bike by itself to remember this specific time in her life before the baby. Those photos are always fun to take, leaving her with memories of all these things she had and was, before. But she also brought things for the baby, including a pair of matching black and white old school Vans (shoes) and a similar to Mom jean biker jacket, mini-sized. We propped these up to have a mix of where her past and future will unite in the journey ahead. Even in the simplicity of staging these items next to her printed ultrasound image on the bike, it felt like we were moving through time in Mom’s life. We captured the adventure that is motherhood.
HARLEY, DOGS, SUNGLASSES & GLAM
Throughout the Anchorage maternity photoshoot, we changed clothes, brought the dogs in and out, rode or simply posed with the bike. We had a blast focusing on Kalia and her overall aesthetic and vibe. She is a fun blend of precious pregnancy glow and tattooed baddie biker babe. This is much like the difference in her two dogs; one a cute and dainty little poodle, the other a big ol’ biker worthy pitty. Some photos portrayed Mamma as glamorous and sweet, while in other shots she looked fierce and ready for the challenge that awaits. This Anchorage maternity shoot truly captured all these elements.
I guess that’s exactly what motherhood is all about. Both sweet and tender and wonderfully feminine, but also something so primal and powerful. It was such an honor to capture this simple truth during Kalia’s rooftop maternity session. We used the elements of her life that matter most to her. Thanks again Kalia, you absolutely glow and I can’t wait to meet this lucky little biker baby!
